Meeting Notes 10-06-11
The meeting started with a presentation from Michael Fondungallah on what the committee has been doing including its partnership with TC Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Charities and Homeless Shelter. The meeting then moved to what the committee can do in the realm of social justice in the parish and community. Suggestions included:
- English as a second language classes
- Tutoring of neighborhood kids
- Connecting parishioners with St. Peter Claver School
- Connecting with other social justice committees
- Monthly social justice reports
- Assist with food bank
- Monthly pot luck to get to know Claver people and different cultures- names for the event include- Celebration Saturday, “Tear down the wall”, “culture crossing”, “Claver culture night”, Cultural encounter”
The idea of a monthly potluck really resonated with the attendees and it was proposed that we do one every second Saturday of the month after the 4 pm mass with the first one beginning November 12. We were advised to talk to Bob to make sure the idea does not conflict with what another committee may be doing.
Denise announced that on December 1, 2011 there will be a speaker at Peter Claver who is also the author of “Spiritual Guide for the Unemployed”. Denise will provide details of this event.
New Business:
- A planning meeting will be scheduled and announced as soon as I talk to Bob.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM.
