Soul Food Sampler/Sister Thea Bowman
On February 26, the Soul Food Sampler, long a tradition at SPC during Black History Month, will be held in conjunction with a very special event in our parish hall following the 10:00 AM Mass. We will be having a guest speaker this year (many will remember the wonderful speakers we had following the inauguration of President Obama at a previous Sampler) and are excited to have Sister Charlene Smith conduct a presentation on Sister Thea Bowman. Here’s a link if you are unfamiliar with Sister Thea: http://www.fspa.org/About%20Us/Sister%20Thea%20Bowman/index.html. Sister Charlene entered the sisterhood at the same time as Sister Thea and wrote the award-winning book, Thea’s Song released earlier this year. “I always like to talk about Thea,” she said as she agreed to make the drive from LaCrosse, WI, for this event.
As part of this event, we are asking parishioners to bring a dish to share as part of the Soul Food Sampler. Here’s what one dictionary says about soul food: “The term soul food became popular in the 1960’s. The origins of soul food, however, are much older and can be traced back to Africa—and to a lesser extent, to Europe as well.” A pretty broad statement. For this event, Soul Food covers any dish you would like to bring and share. The parish will supply the beverages. Please mark your calendar and plan on attending. Your participation will make it a success!
“Laissez les bon temps rouller”
Please join the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. Peter Claver as we celebrate Mardi Gras with our annual dance. The dance will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012, in the church hall. EVERYONE is welcome! Ticket prices are $20 each and can be purchased this weekend following the 4:00 PM Mass on Saturday, January 21 and following the 8:00 and 10:00 AM Masses on Sunday, January 22.
